How it works
Feel it. Map it. See your overview.
-
1 · Feel it
Twenty seconds of counting quiet glows while notifications try to catch your eyes, and a moment to notice how your head and body feel right now.
-
2 · Map it
About 26 quick taps across the five places attention leaks: your phone, other people, your own switching, your energy and your set-up.
-
3 · See your overview
A simple overview of your own answers: where interruptions came up most, your own words, and one idea to try.
Why a ripple matters
An interruption lasts longer than the moment it takes.
Interruptions this short doubled the rate of errors when people went back to a task that needed them to keep their place.
Altmann, Trafton & Hambrick, 2014People who were interrupted made up for it by working faster, and paid for it with more stress, frustration and time pressure.
Mark, Gudith & Klocke, 2008After switching, part of your attention stays with the unfinished task, like ripples that keep spreading, and performance on the next one drops.
Leroy, 2009What the check maps

Questions
Before you begin.
Is it really free?
Yes. The check and a simple overview of your own answers are free: the share of interruptions in your answers, the five areas, your own words and one idea to try. No account, no advertising.
Is this an ADHD test?
No. Distraction Meter looks at everyday distraction and what protects your focus. It can't diagnose ADHD, depression or anything else. If attention difficulties have been with you since childhood, at home, school and work alike, a doctor or psychologist can assess that properly.
Where do my answers go?
Nowhere. They stay in your browser on this device, including anything you write in your own words. Your past numbers are kept here so you can compare next time. You can delete everything at the end of your overview or on the privacy page.
How is the score calculated?
Twenty statements in five areas, each answered from Never to Almost always. Each area becomes a number from 0 to 100, and the overall number is a weighted average. The 20-second exercise and the questions about how you feel and what matters to you are not scored. Every weight is on the methodology page. It is a structured self-check, not a validated psychological test.
Why sound and touch?
Some people understand distraction better when they hear and feel it, not just read about it. If you turn it on, the pings make a soft sound and, on phones that support it, a short vibration. It's off unless you switch it on.
